UNISON is the largest Trade union representing Support Staff both nationally and in the local authority.

We currently have over 1500 members in Enfield from schools and this is rising weekly.

Our aim is to have an elected active Steward in each school within the next two academic years. We are currently entering our second year of a program visiting each school within the borough to aid the recruitment of Stewards and contacts personally. This has proved to be extremely effective, already demonstrating the advantages of having a steward in schools, both personally and professionally.

The continuing round of restructures with possible redundancies still on-going in schools. Nearly all of the secondary’s have completed at least one, with some already on their second or third restructure. We are now seeing more primaries starting with both Grange Park and Alma currently restructuring part or all of their support staff teams.

Budget concerns will continue to impact on schools staffing and form part of the rational for these restructures and cuts, forcing some schools to consider the option of conversion to academy status. Edmonton County and The Bowes Learning Alliance have just converted over the summer. I attended a conference in July at the Dugdale Centre to discuss concerns regarding this and what could be done by all of us including the Local Authority to stem the tide and offer alternatives.

November 2016 sees us celebrating the immense contribution that Support Staff bring to schools and letters and info have gone out to all Head Teachers and Stewards. Please send us pictures and reports regarding your celebrations so we can post them on the website.
